National Seminar on

SEISMIC safety for CONCRETE GRAVITY DAMS

27 February 2009, New Delhi

Themes

  • Geological & seismological considerations in fixing seismic design parameters for an acceptable risk
  • Design methodology and criteria for acceptable design
  • Modern analysis methods and risk-based approach using failure mode analysis
  • Issues of policy making and implementation

Background

India is witnessing an upsurge in the hydel power projects and consequently in the construction of new concrete gravity dams. The seismic safety of such dams has been a serious concern since damage to the Koyna Dam in India in 1967 which has been regarded as a watershed event in the development of seismic analysis and design of concrete gravity dams all over the world. It is essential that those responsible must implement policies and procedures to ensure seismic safety of dams through sound professional practices and state-of-the-art in related technical areas. Seismic safety of dams concerns public safety and therefore demands a higher degree of public confidence.

About the Seminar

The seminar will focus on issues and best practices towards seismic safety of concrete gravity dams, with special reference to state-of-the-practice in India and the United States. The seminar will enable the concerned professionals to appreciate various aspects of the concrete gravity design and construction which relate to its seismic safety. It will provide an excellent opportunity to share the information and ideas on the topic.
