Executive Summary

A summary of activities…
I.I.T.Kanpur has a wide spectrum of activities in the area of Earthquake Engineering with the basic goal of enabling the country to build earthquake-resistant structures. In-house student research, sponsored research (both experimental and analytical), code development, post-earthquake surveys, earthquake engineering consultancy for major projects, and continuing education are some of the main thrusts here. The following are the list of activities in the broad field of Earthquake Engineering that faculty members at this Institute are involved.

Active Areas
    Student research
Sponsored research projects supported by leading national agencies
Study of code provisions leading to revision/development of Indian design codes
Consultants to national agencies on major projects of national importance
Continuing education programmes for professional engineers
Post-earthquake field surveys of six recent Indian earthquakes
Technical collaborations with research institutes and universities in India and Nepal
Professional workshops for developing earthquake engineering in India
    Publishing in earthquake engineering
    Professional societies and technical committees

Major Contributions over the Past Two Decades

Continuing Education Programmes:
Over 2000 professionals have been trained in earthquake-resistant design and construction so far in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

Development of Indian Seismic Codes:
Participated as lead authors in the exhaustive review, rationalization and redrafting the provisions in BIS and IRC Codes related to seismic design of structures.

National Information Center for Earthquake Engineering (India):
A National Information Center of Earthquake Engineering (NICEE) has been set up at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The Center is sponsored by HUDCO, Telecom Commission, Railway Board, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Atomic Energy. An Important release under NICEE is the IITK-BMTPC Earthquake Tips, which involves releasing every month two A-4 size page of written materials on earthquake resistant design and construction.

National Programme on Earthquake Engineering Education:
National  Programme  on Earthquake Engineering Education (NPEEE) has been launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India to develop a strong human resource of engineering college teachers in earthquake engineering. IIT Kanpur is the coordinating Institute.
